It's time to do lots and lots of paintings. I'm not complaining and am enjoying myself tremendously having set time aside to do just that.

BLOG

blog1Friday 23 May2009

This year so far has been excellent as far as the painting goes. I now have a studio, am doing plenty of 'plein air' painting, went to some great workshops with John Wilson, Steve Underwood and Dave Thomas.
Learning more skills is so much fun.
Also I am exhibiting at the Old Milk Factory in Bowral, which is open 7 days a week and have sold some paintings. At the moment I am just finishing off a couple of paintings and as soon as I have finished them I'm starting a series of paintings on wild horses called
'brumbies' in Australia.  They will be in the Australian bush settings.
As everyone who knows me is aware already I have always loved horses. There is a real need to protect the wild horses. Many people in Australia consider them to be bad for the fragile environment as they are not native animals.Others catch them, and they are also hunted and killed. Originally the brumbies were domesticated and brought into Australia but some escaped or were let loose and adapted to the wild. I have decided to focus on the horses in the Snowy Mountains in NSW for now.
We combined seeing and photographing the brumbies with a short holiday. There is a large property of over 7000 acres called the Snowy Wilderness about 25km from Jindabyne. The owners have given this property over to the brumbies and it is possible to go on 4 wheel drive excursions. We took our 4 wheel drive and followed Delia, our patient guide, who took us to the best
spots. I managed to get lots of photographs to use as reference for my new series of paintings.
The brumbies are very curious but none of them wanted to come too close. This is also because they have been chased before. A few of them have become quite tame and one gorgeous fellow came to sniff my hand, which smelled very nice as I had just eaten an apple.  I hope to visit the Snowy Wilderness property as often as I can while doing the series to absorb the beautiful
rugged surroundings, the home of the brumbies.
We also hiked up Mount Kosiosko during our trip. The conditions were perfect, sunny and quite chilly, no wind to speak of. There was still some snow and we took in the breathtaking scenery while walking and mucking around in the snow. There are some very stunning granite outcrops that are
going to make some excellent painting subjects. So do have a look on my website again in the near future if you wish to see my next paintings.
